How to ensure your plants survive the desert?

In the desert, planting is less about what looks good at the nursery and more about what lives. Two things decide that: choosing plants that belong here, and getting them into the ground the right way.
We plant desert-adapted trees and shrubs, such as palo verde (the Arizona state tree), mesquite, desert willow, Texas sage, red bird of paradise; and we plant them for real: an auger through the caliche so roots aren't sitting in a bathtub, the correct depth, and a drip line run to each one so it establishes instead of struggling.
Placed well, a single shade tree cuts your cooling bill and makes a whole yard feel finished. We've been choosing and planting for East Valley yards since 2000 (ROC #341642), and we'll talk you out of the pretty plant that won't make it through August.
